At age 80, Antonio Cerri was one of the last winegrowers tending vines in Boca, a small wine region just north of the famed Barolo. In 1988 he was met by both Christoph Kunzi and Alexander Tolf, potential winemakers who had only just become interested in Boca. Christof and Alexander soon purchased the plots from Antonio, promising to live out his ancient traditions in farming and winemaking. They have restored 8 hectares of Nebbiolo, Vespolina and Croatina, making wines of place from the volcanic soils and the Alpine climate. The Le Piane wines are made without modern winemaking techniques, keeping it old school for our boy, Antonio.
The Maggiorina is plucked from various small plots of field blends, each with at least 12 varieties. Varieties are co-fermented, each added its own lift, color and structure. The resulting wine is a light bodied, highly drinkable, highly approachable iteration of Nebbiolo. Floral aromas, dried cherry and roses. Bright acidity on the palate with more floral action. All stainless all pure fruit. Molto Bene.
